Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Agdz – Draa Valley – Zagora Desert
This private 4 days Marrakech to M'hamid Erg Chigaga desert trip will begin with an early pick-up from your accommodation in Marrakech, at around 7 a.m. The journey will take you over the High Atlas Mountains, where we will cross the highest pass in Morocco, Tizi N’Tichka (2260 m in altitude). An important stop in your trip will be for visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, which is the location of numerous Hollywood successful movies (Gladiator, Price of Persia, Game of Thrones, Cleopatra, etc.). You will have the opportunity to learn more about the magic and history of the place with the help of a local guide. Afterwards, we will be heading to Ouarzazate, known as “The Gate of the Sahara” and due to the presence of a big movie-making set here, it is also known as the Moroccan version of Hollywood. Another important location that will be visited is a famous Kasbah among the tourists, Taourirt. Near this place you will also enjoy your lunch (own expense) with a beautiful landscape to admire. We continue our trip towards Draa Valley, crossing the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the N’Tnifift pass (1710 m), the former route of caravans for Sahara traders, to the oasis of Agdz. The Draa Valley is fortified by Kasbahs and oases covered by thousands of palm trees. This valley hosts the largest palm tree plantation in Morocco. Upon arrival to Zagora, you will have dinner and spend the night in a local hotel.
Zagora - Tamegroute – M’hamid - Erg Chigaga
After breakfast, we begin a new day by visiting the surroundings of Zagora. One of the most interesting and artistic places to visit in Zagora’s Sahara Desert is the Amezrou Silversmiths workshop located inside the old Jewish Quarter (mellah). The Silversmiths workshop offers a look back in time at how traditional Moroccan silversmiths and blacksmiths worked with silver by hand from the stage of creating a mold from scratch, melting silver, pouring the silver into the mold, with the final outcome being a creation of what is referred to as a Southern Crosses. We continue our trip to M’hamid, a small village in Zagora region of Morocco, 98 km after Zagora, one of the two places in southern Morocco where Sahara begins (another is Merzouga). It is considered the end of the road, as from this point you can see only sand dunes and caravan trails. On our way, we will visit the town of Tamgroute, with its Quranic library composed of more than 4000 ancient manuscripts and an underground Kasbah. After lunch between the mesmerizing sand dunes of Erg Lihoudi accompanied by nomads, we head to our destination point. We pass through M’hamid and continue the road until the oasis of Oum l’Aleg, the only oasis with its own water source in the middle of the desert. The camel trekking adventure will begin across the Erg Chigaga dunes just in time to witness an amazing sunset in the Sahara area. After arriving to the camp, where you will spend the night in nomadic tents, you will enjoy delicious traditional Moroccan food, next to a fire camp, while being entertained by local Berbers playing their drums.
Erg Chigaga – Iriqui Lake - Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Ait Ben Haddou
After an early wake up so you can watch the sunrise while riding the camels, you will have breakfast and depart to your destination by passing through the largest dry lake in Morocco, Iriqui, which is also an old Dakar track that takes you to Foum Zguid. A stop for lunch (own expense) will be made in a Berber village, Taznakht, where you will have the opportunity to discover how Moroccan carpets are manufactured. The night will be spent in the UNESCO World Heritage site Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, which is the location of numerous Hollywood successful movies (Gladiator, Prince of Persia, Game of Thrones, Cleopatra, etc.).
Ait Ben Haddou – Telouet – Marrakech
The morning activities for the last day of the trip include a visit to the Ksar Ait Ben Haddou. Afterward, we take the direction to the Kasbah of Telouet, along the former route of the caravans from the Sahara over the Atlas Mountains, while catching glimpses of Berber villages clinging to the cliffs, holm oaks (holly oaks) and pines. We carry on our way back by crossing the highest pass in Morocco, the Tizi N'Tichka pass (2260 m in altitude), and numerous Berber villages. The 4 days desert trip, which we are sure you will consider an amazing experience to remember, will end at your hotel or riad in Marrakech.
